I thought I'd share a few before and after comparisons of photo's I've taken. Photographers spend a lot of time editing their images to meet the expectations of their clients, and I'm no exception. Nothing is more pleasing than when I receive an email or talk to a client who absolutely loves their photo's ... it makes all the hours of editing worthwhile!

Sometimes it is fun to take an image and make it something vastly different from the original.

Sometimes all an image needs is a little cleaning up

and other times you get a face that is so cute you just want to give it a little boost!

I absolutely LOVE this family! They are some of my favourite clients. Saturday was not a typical photo session for me, partially because I was feeling so miserable and sick, but mostly because we planned to do photo's inside at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and my external flash wouldn't cooperate! I really appreciate how flexible Joanna and Marlan were in braving the cold and getting photo's taken outside.

These are some of my favourite people, and I don't get to see them often enough. They moved from Salt Lake to Phoenix a few years ago. Jen asked me to do family portraits for them while they are up here visiting. I had a blast during our photo session; laughing and playing around and generally having a super fun time! I miss these guys ... Jen you all need to move back to SLC!

On a side note; does anyone else think Jen's daughter looks like Uma Thurman? I personally think the likeness is amazing!

Why We Edit

I've had several people ask why I have to edit photo's. The best answer I can give is that I want the best possible photo's for my clients. Unfortunately all the editing takes time, but I believe altimately it's WELL worth it.

Here is just one example of how editing can take a photo from nice to gorgeous.

Leaf litter on the cobblestones, weed along the wall, and the fence and dirt in the background.

After editing the focus is definitely on the subject. All of the distractions have gone and the image is clean.

Some of you might look at these pictures and recognise the gorgeous woman in the pictures and think to yourself "Bridals? She's been married for ten years!" and you'd be exactly right. For her ten year anniversary Andrea wanted to get bridal shots done because she didn't have any when she was a bride. She wanted something a little more artsy than the more traditional bridal shots, so we headed out to Saltair and took a few shots and then up to the Garden Park ward house in Sugarhouse area.

She looks gorgeous in her gown. I can't get over the fact that she fits it! I had a blast spending the morning with you Andrea. I hope you love your photo's. Thanks for allowing me to be your photographer.

I had the pleasure of photographing this lovely couple and their family ... 30 of them in all. They were all together for a family reunion at a beautiful cabin in the Heber Valley. I've never been to Heber before, but I can tell you without a doubt that I want to return. It is a beautiful place.

It was a glorious evening for the shoot, so sunny and warm, in fact we had a difficult time finding a place to take the photo's that wasn't saturated in sun!!

We had a fun afternoon stroll at spot along the shores of The Great Salt Lake. I didn't realise how beautiful it is there. It's certainly a place I'm going to return to again, perhaps I'll find another spot of shoreline and explore a little more.

It does seem crazy to me that Emma is wearing a summer outfit and there is still snow on the mountains in the distance. I've come to realise that's just how Utah weather is ... four seasons in one day sometimes!

Steve Klinac won the "100 fan" free photo shoot from Bella Photography's Facebook page last year. So this morning we got together at Ardmore Airfield, in Auckland, New Zealand with his two gorgeous boys for our session. I had a great time wandering around the airfield photographing the guys, and learning the different names of planes and a little about when and where they were used.

The Do's And Don't Of Stealing Photo's From Your Photographer

I just read this AWESOME post on a blog by another photographer. It answers so many questions and offers so much enlightenment to those who hire photographers to capture images of their family. It may be a long post, but well worth the read. This is what she had to say {you can link to her blog at the bottom of the post}:

"I get asked a lot by both photographers and clients what my policy is on letting my clients post their images to their blogs and facebook account. I personally love it when my clients post their family pictures on their blogs, facebook, etc. It shows me that they truly love their images! I encourage my clients to “steal” their pictures from my blog to use on the internet. Here are a few do’s and don’ts that you should think about when reposting your images:

1) DO ask your photographer what their specific policy is on taking pictures off of their blogs. Some photographers encourage it and some don’t allow it. If this is important to you this is something you should ask BEFORE you hire your photographer!

2) DO include your photographer’s name and website under the images (a link would be super nice!). That’s just the polite thing to do

3) DON’T crop out their logo. Unless you have paid for the digital negatives don’t alter the files in anyway. Most photographers use their blogs to advertise their work and do so as a courtesy to give their clients a sneak peek. If a client crops out the logo then how will other people know who took the picture?

4) DON’T edit the picture in any way. Taking the pictures is only half of a photographers job. The other half is editing. If you think you can do a better job or want to edit out some of your wrinkles or use selective coloring please don’t show and/or tell your photographer. That is super insulting. If you don’t like your photographers editing enough to want to edit it yourself than maybe you need to find another photographer next year.

5) DON’T try to print from the files on the blog. For me specifically I know that the files I upload to my blog are too small to be printed in a 4×6 size. It’s not cool to invest in a family session and then print the images off of the blog and not pay for prints. Make sure you know how much the prints cost before the session to avoid sticker shock. Same goes for scanning prints that you already bought. Not cool! Some of my family members are guilty of printing images off of my blog. It makes me cringe when I see them FRAMED in their homes with my logo still on there! To be fair, I’m also not great at emailing them the file when they ask for it.

Marquis Newman - Cap and Gown Portraits

I first met Marquis and his Mom last fall when I did his senior pictures. I was struck by the relationship he and his Mom share. This session I saw an entirely new side to Marquis. He was a HOOT and had me in stitches for half the session with his antics. Such a fun loving young man ... and smart too. He is going to be attending the University of Utah on an Academic Scholarship after graduating high school with an amazing GPA and other awards. I wish him all the best in his university career. Catch Lights

I have been asked the same questions several times about this picture of Emma that I posted on our family blog; "What did I do in Photoshop to make her eyes so pretty?" The answer: Nothing. What people are referring to is called 'Catch Light.' The sparkly glimmer in her eyes.

If you look carefully at her eyes you can see two horizontal lines, those are the sidewalk outside our house and our neighbours house, the darker area in the middle is the grass separating our two houses and then there is me standing vertically in the middle.

Emma was sitting under our patio looking out toward the yard which is why the lighting is so even on her face. The only editing I did in Photoshop was lighten it slightly and convert the image to Chocolate Black and White.

Finding the 'Catch Light' is something I have been trying to focus on in my portrait photo's lately.

The Other Kind of "Senior"

This lovely young lady recently turned 85. She wanted some photo's to commemorate this auspicious occasion and asked if I would be willing to help her out. How could I so no?! There isn't anything bad you could say about this young woman. Kendall is our neighbour and is graduating from Cyprus High School next week. There is a small part of me that thinks of Kendall as the young girl that we first met when we moved here nearly 8 years ago, but then I look at her and think about all she has accomplished and everything she has to look forward to in her near future, and I know she is an amazing young woman. Kendall has been accepted to The University of Utah where she is going to study dance. She is incredibly talented. A couple of weeks ago Kendall spent 7 hours trying out for the Crimson Line, the U's dance squad, and she made the team. I'm so proud of her.

This one is for her Mom, Jill ... just something a little unexpected!!

And this last one is totally Kendall's personality.

We love you Kendall! I know you're going to have such a great time at the U, meet great people, and experience phenomenal things. They are lucky to have you.

I had such a blast roaming around Magna with this family. The Johnson's grew up in the area and so it was the perfect place for their family shoot. It is a great reflection of their family history with ample character, and a great variety of options for photo's in a relatively close area.

Emma {Photo Effects}

I thought I would take the opportunity to demonstrate a couple of the image effects that I have available.

This is Soft and Faded by Pioneer Woman used in conjunction with a mask for muted tones and a lovely antique feel.

This one is Creamy Chocolate by Coffeeshop. It is a very soft black and white with chocolate tones. Classic and beautiful! This is a creamy replacement for the traditional, more orange toned, sepia effect.

Sunkissed also by Coffeeshop adds orange tones, a haze, and a lens flare to the original image. One of my favourite effects.

Oh, the eyes, the eyes! This gorgeous young thing was so much fun to shoot today. I had her climbing tree's, laying in wet grass, sitting in dirt and she didn't bat an eyelid over it. She was such a great sport. Not to mention incredibly beautiful. I can't wait to finish the edit on the rest of the pictures from her shoot this afternoon.

An Honor

One of my favourite photography blogs is i heart faces. Every week they have a photo challenge with a particular theme. Last week the theme was "Bundled Up" and on Monday I entered a photo of Emma bundled up in her hat and scarf. Each week there is a well known photographer who judges all of the entries, and then Angie and Amy, who are the co-founders of the blog, pick a few of their favourites from the hundreds of entries. This week Amy and Angie picked my picture of Emma as one of their favourites from over 700 entries. It is quite an honor for me. These two ladies know photography, I look at their personal images in awe.

Anyway, I thought I would take a few minutes to share my excitement on here with my Bella followers, and thank you for your continued support and encouragement. I am constantly trying to challenge myself and improve my skills in order to serve you better as clients and friends. I think these weekly challenges push me to try new things, and the other contestants inspire and motivate me.

I did my first ever LARGE extended family shoot the other day and had an absolute blast. I feel so lucky that this experience was with a group of people who are very laid back, it made the entire experience a joy. There were 18 adults and 17 kiddo's. I was so impressed with how the kids behaved, they listened and followed instructions so well. They were a dream to work with.

Emma's Fall Fun

Fall is such a beautiful time of year. The leaves change on the trees and eventually fall to cover the ground in a crisp and crunchy blanket. It's time to pull out the scarves and jackets, and layer up to keep warm. Everything is so beautiful in burnt orange, golden yellow, and warm browns. It's the perfect time to head outside and spend a few minutes playing around in the leaves having some fun, and to snap a couple of pictures. Unfortunately ... or perhaps it is fortunate ... we don't have any leaves around our place because of the grounds crew that the Home Owners Association hires to take care of our yard, so we had to go on a little outing to find some leaves to play around in.

Marquis Newman - Senior Picture Sneak Peek

I had such a great morning this morning with this gorgeous young man and his Mom. We spent a couple of hours down town taking Marquis' senior pictures. I was very impressed with Marquis. He is a very confident, polite, respectful young man. You can tell without a shadow of a doubt that he loves his Mom and that he has a great deal of respect for her ... rarely seen in teenagers these days. Mom, Sherida, was obviously proud of her son and rightly so. It was really refreshing to see a mother and son with a relationship like theirs.

Meet the Larson Family. They are a very sweet family. The older "Miss Larson" and "Master Larson" LOVED to have their picture taken and were willing to try everything. The littlest "Miss Larson", however, was not so accommodating, until it came time for her mommy and daddy to have a few pictures taken by themselves ... the she was ALL OVER IT, or should I say 'all over them!' It was a fun shoot for me. I love Wheeler Farm and being there with this family was a great time. These are a few of my favourite shots from the day.

These are some of the most beautiful young women I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I don't know if you can see what I see, but I look at them and their beauty shines through their eyes. How is it fair for one family to get so much!? The thing I find most endearing about them, in particular the youngest, is that adorable spatter of freckles that travels across the nose and along the cheeks! So stinkin' CUTE! Another thing I noticed about these girls is that they all have a certain amount of spunk and sass, but not in a negative way.

My love for photography began when a friend had their baby's picture taken by Anne Geddes. I fell in love with the way her pictures were captured and realized that beauty can be captured in the most diverse ways. Staged or candid, a photograph tells so much about a person, and each pose is a reflection of how we want to be remembered. Over the years I have taken thousands of photo's and have always yearned for a camera that could produce the quality of photographs I would be proud to hang on my wall. Earlier this year my hope for such a camera was fulfilled and I got a CANON REBEL XS. What can I say other than I LOVE IT!? When my husband commented that I had become too "Snap Happy" I decided that perhaps it was time I found some subjects other than my immediate family. I offered to take some maternity photographs for my sister-in-law and she readily agreed. They quickly became some of my favourites. Since then I have enjoyed working with babies, families, and have even taken a few senior pictures. I hope to continue in the same fashion for a long time to come.
